⚡ Electrical Tip of the Week: What Not To Do ⚡We recently came across a homeowner-built “fluorescent fixture” mounted to a scrap piece of wood using random parts. While we appreciate creativity, this is a serious safety hazard. Here’s why this is a big NO:• ❌ Not Properly Tested or Listed – Electrical components should be certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory. That marking means the product has been tested for safety under real-world conditions.• ❌ Improper Materials – Wood is combustible. Ballasts generate heat. Mixing heat-producing electrical components with flammable materials is a fire risk.• ❌ Unknown Wiring Integrity – Random parts and improper connections can lead to arcing, overheating, and shock hazards.• ❌ Insurance & Code Issues – Non-approved electrical assemblies can violate code and may create issues with insurance coverage in the event of a loss. What To Do Instead:✔ Use only properly listed and approved fixtures and components✔ Install equipment inside correct, rated enclosures✔ Follow National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements✔ When in doubt, call a licensed electricianSaving a few dollars on makeshift electrical work can cost thousands in fire damage — or worse. If you’re unsure whether something in your home is safe or up to code, we’re happy to take a look. Your safety is always worth doing it right the first time.
* Warning: To reduce the risk of electric shock or injury, always disconnect all electrical power before beginning any installation, maintenance, or repair work.
